Craft co-creation
SU pitcher is a graphical reinterpretation of ancient Ottoman Ewers. A modern take on its sculptural volumes and vivid patterns that uses the same ancient technique, Iznik ceramics.
Thanks to the collaborative project “From Ancient Anatolian Crafts to Contemporary Designs” organized by the Turkey Design Council, we got the chance to work hand with hand with a master Iznik crafter to create the two pieces shown today
Technique
This ottoman technique uses high concentrated quartz base that allows the bright glazes to come to life. Looking to showcase the uniqueness of the Iznik glazes, colors have been used as blocks that play with new unexpected volume. A visual contrast that brings attention to the materials themselves and the mastery of the craft. The clean minimal lines show the precision of the clay together with hand brush touches in the underglazes. The result is a modern design that hopes to add a new visual chapter to an archaic tradition.
