Awareness installation
Public workshop
The collaboration
The KOMADE platform was created with the intention of reviving traditional Mediterranean crafts in a collaborative manner.
For this occasion we collaborated with ‘Ses Madones de Sa Llata’, a local initiative that tries to preserve the lost knowledge of basket weaving undertaken at Capdepera, Mallorca, by a group of retired women. During the Dutch Design Week 2012, we had the opportunity to organize and guide a workshop around the traditional basket weaving techniques of braided palm leaves.
The workshop
With a desire to share and communicate the importance of crafts, we took the time to export what the “Ses Madones de Sa Llata” taught us at the “Let’s do Llata” workshop. At this event, participants could make their own bookmarks from palm leaves.
Allowing people to have a first hand experience of braiding, we were able to communicate the stories of these local women and their connection to past traditions. Visitors were then also able to appreciate the effort behind each product, and the bond that comes by passing down the art of crafting an object. Any visitor could drop in and spend between 15-20 minutes with us while creating their own bookmark memento.
