KOMADE - LLATA WORKSHOP

Komade is a collaborative project, inspired by Mediterranean crafts, exploring traditional Majorcan basket weaving techniques of braided palm leaves, called Llata. KOMADE chooses to revive the old crafts by working closely with local artisans in collaboration with ‘Ses Madones de Sa Llata’.It is an initiative that tries to preserve the lost knowledge of basket weaving undertaken at Capdepera, Majorca, by a group of retired ladies.

The desire was to share and communicate the importance of crafts and knowledge passed on by making. People are behind this history, so we wanted to hand back power to them, so that they may keep it alive. By doing it themselves, the visitors were able to appreciate the effort behind each product, the cultural heritage and the bond that comes by passing down the art of crafting an object.

We took the time to export what the “Ses Madones de Sa Llata” taught us, while raising awareness and sharing our craft history and know-how. During the Dutch Design Week 2012 KOMADE was presented and a workshop was organised called “Let’s do Llata”, where participants could make their own bookmarks, using the technique of braiding palm leaves.
